New tractor sales take off in April with 52% lift

The latest FTMTA Statistics Service Report for April 2025 shows the current level of vehicle registration activity in the farm machinery sector in Ireland. The numbers of imported used tractors and machines, registered for the first time in Ireland, increased compared with the same month of April 2024.

 

Tractors

The April 2025 new tractor market at 291 units was 52% higher compared with the same month in 2024, while the year-to-date 2025 new tractor registration moving total figure was just 4% lower at 1,025 units compared with 1,069 units for the first four months of 2024.

In Ireland, County Cork continued to deliver the highest number of new tractor registrations at 167 units for the year-to-date, while Tipperary was ranked in second place with 99 units followed by Galway at 59 units.

The most popular power band is the 141hp to 160hp category, which for April 2025 accounted for 28.8% of all new tractor registrations for the month. Tractors in the power band lower than 100hp accounted for just 8.68% of all new tractor registrations so far in 2025. The over 200hp category accounted for 12.9% of all new tractors for the year-to-date. The monthly average tractor horsepower figure for April 2025 was 151hp which is a marginal drop from 153hp in April 2025 and the two largest tractors registered were each rated at 439hp.

The FTMTA data shows that 323 imported used tractors were first-time registered in Ireland in April 2025, 60 more units than in April 2024. The year-to-date used tractor registration figure at 984 units was 49 units more than was registered for the first four months of 2024.

 

Telescopic Loaders

The Irish market for new telescopic loaders reported a 33% increase in April 2025 at 72 units, compared with April 2024. The latest FTMTA data shows new telescopic loader registrations for the year-to-date increased by 15.1% to 381 units compared with the same four months of 2024 when 331 units were registered. The two leading brands JCB and Manitou accounted for 75% of the total market, while the Kramer market share has dipped to almost 9%. There were 52 imported used telescopic loaders registered in April 2025 marginally down from 54 in April 2024.

 

Wheeled Loaders

The Irish wheeled loader market recorded an increased number of new registrations in April 2025 at 38 units compared with April 2024 at 20 units, which was a market increase of 47%. Three traditional brands, JCB, Komatsu and Volvo made a resurgence and now accounted for 45% of all new wheeled loader registrations so far in 2025. There were just 8 imported used wheeled loaders registered in April 2025.

 

Backhoe Loaders

The Irish backhoe loader market decreased in April 2025 compared with April 2024 with just 2 new machines registered, which converts to a 42% decrease. There were 4 used backhoe loaders registered in April 2025 in Ireland. For the period from January to April 2025 there were 24 new backhoe loaders registered in Ireland compared with 28 in the first four months of 2024.
